Update From Ghana

Hey everybody,
Just wanted to give u a quick update on the photovoice project you have all been a part of supporting. I’m teaching J.S.S. (which is like junior high) at a small school in Madina, Accra. The kids are wonderful, very sharp, almost all girls. We’ve been working on compositions. One assignment was to describe a dream they had once had. Another was to write about some of the issues in Ghana and in their communities. The photography side is developing slowly, mostly because right now the school’s priority is to prepare the kids for their mid-semester exams. I’ve been doing photo stuff with a few of the more serious students, after school, and some neighborhood kids in my area. They’ve been taking some interesting shots, a fair number of their feet, but the idea is to start with what they know: their families, games they play, Ghana.

Last week I went back to the village of Gedekope, where I did some research a few years ago as an undergraduate. The village is about three hours outside of the capital city, Accra. There is no electricity or running water and almost everyone living there are farmers. The children also work in the farms and around the house, and some are able to attend
the local school. With your contributions, I brought the school in Gedekope a box of materials, text books, pens, etc., and contributed to the construction of a new classroom. I hope all is well on the great island. Thank you again for your support in this project and I’ll keep you all
updated as things progress.
